HATTEMER Theodore A. ,an entrepreneur and proud family man who was well known for his generous spirit and his playful sense of humor, died on Saturday, May 23, at age 91. Ted, who pursued almost as many business ventures as he had grandchildren, was the beloved husband of the late Elizabeth Hattemer (nee Cassin). He was born in Louisville, KY, February 2, 1918, the youngest of John and Ida Mooser Hattemer's nine children. He graduated from St. Xavier High School in Louisville and attended the University of Louisville. In Louisville, he started several businesses before moving to Cincinnati with his wife and family in 1961. In Cincinnati, he continued his entrepreneurial ways, expanding the Ad-Here Corp., which he sold to Consolidated Foods in 1968. After a brief period of semi-retirement, he returned to the business world as a commercial real estate broker and the co-founder of a string of successful store and lock facilities in the Cincinnati area. He was a mentor to numerous young people as they began their own business careers. He also became active internationally, establishing connections with his parents' relatives in Switzerland and Germany. A deeply spiritual man, Ted was active in many parishes in Louisville and Cincinnati, Bellarmine Chapel, the Saturday Prayer Group, and a long time Friars Club Board member and supporter. He also was active in numerous civic and business organizations, including Camp Kooch-I-Ching. While the larger community knew Ted as a man of boundless energy and unflagging spirit, many -- especially his friends and family - also knew him for his jokes and pranks. A typical moment came several years ago, when St. George's Church honored him on his birthday. After the congregation surprised him with a hearty rendition of "Happy Birthday," Ted marched to the front of the church and blew out the candles on the altar - a moment that captured both the affectionate regard in which so many held him and the irrepressibly impish nature of his personality. Ted and Liz were blessed with 11 children: Mary Moore (Bob); Kevin Hattemer; the late James Cassin Hattemer (Mary); Colleen Holwerk (David); Anne Sylvester (Erich); Jane Hattemer Stringer (Pete); Leah Hemenway (Bob); Therese Hattemer (Biff Maier); Frank Hattemer (Liz); Clare Plattner (Steve); and Charles Hattemer (Ellen). He was the revered grandfather of the late Edward Rueve DVM, David Rueve, Elizabeth Miller, Patrick Borders, Scott Borders, Salli Cathro, Hollis Bass, Sarah Hattemer, Theodore Hattemer, Christian Hattemer, Benjamin Hattemer, Charles Holwerk, Louis Holwerk, Elinor Brown, Chris Bill, Gina Ruskamp, Jeremy Hemenway, Robin Hemenway, Karintha Hemenway, Matthew Hemenway, Langston Hemenway, Zachary Hemenway, Arna Hemenway, Ida Hattemer-Higgins, Theodore Hattemer-Maier, Henry Hattemer, Andy Hattemer, the late George Hattemer, Charles Hattemer, Alexander Plattner, James Plattner, Kate Hattemer, Spencer Hattemer, Derek Hattemer, Lucy Hattemer, Emma Hattemer, Rebecca Hattemer, Peter Hattemer, and Henry Hattemer. He has 30 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Ted was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth, his brothers and sisters, his son James Cassin Hattemer, and his grandsons, Edward Rueve and George Hattemer. In addition to his family, Ted is survived by his sweetheart and dear friend Marietta Garber, who brought joy into his life in recent years.
